Mathematics 11 Quadratics

Specific Curriculum Outcomes

RF02     Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of quadratic functions, including: vertex, intercepts, domain and range and the axis of symmetry.

RF02 activities

  • Two Truths and One Lie from Jon Orr -  Students worked in pairs as a team to develop the two truths and one lie about a quadratic function. After writing their statements on a sticky note they traded stickies with another group and identified which statements were true and which was the lie.

  • Down the Drain from Erick Lee - Drain the water from a hole in the bottom of a water bottle to investigate two different quadratic relationships: the shape of the stream of water and the rate the water level falls.
  • Desmos Polygraph: Parabolas - This is a great online activity for a class to try out.One student selects a parabola.  Another student tries to guess which parabola was chosen by asking yes/no questions.  Student practice mathematical communication in this activity.
  • Angry Birds: The Parabolic Edition from Jocelyn Procopio and Angry Birds - Parabolas from Jon Orr - Given different parabolic flight paths do the angry birds hit the pigs?
  • Polynomial Roots and End Behaviour Card Sort from Julie Reulbach - This would be a nice activity to modify to work with just quadratics vice all polynomials. Let me know if you're an HRSB teacher and would like help developing this idea.
