MAthematics 9 Polynomials

Specific Curriculum Outcomes

PR05     Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of polynomials (limited to polynomials of degree less than or equal to two).

PR06     Students will be expected to model, record, and explain the operations of addition and subtraction of polynomial expressions, concretely, pictorially, and symbolically (limited to polynomials of degree less than or equal to two).

PR07     Students will be expected to model, record, and explain the operations of multiplication and division of polynomial expressions, concretely, pictorially, and symbolically (limited to polynomials of degree less than or equal to two).  

PR05 activities

  • Which One Doesn't Belong - A WODB question I created to introduce some polynomial terms to students for outcome PR05.

  • Venn Diagram Polynomials Problem - Each of three regions in a Venn diagram have a different characteristic of a polynomial expression.  Ask students to create their own polynomial expressions that satisfy the constraints for each region in a given Venn diagram. Students can challenge themselves to make unique expressions.  This problem was inspired from a RISP.

  • Interactive Polynomials Activities - This is a Mimio ink file I created with a few introductory activities for polynomials.  Included are a WODB, Venn diagram problem, dragging expressions to the correct label and modeling expressions with algebra tiles.

pr06 activities

  • Expression Pyramids with 'p' and Expression Pyramids with 'n' from Don Steward - Students add polynomial expressions together in a pyramid. Each level of the pyramid is the sum of the levels below it. Ask students to complete the pyramids given or even create their own to challenge each other.

pr07 activities

  • Bull's Eye Worksheet - In this Bull's Eye worksheet, students are to add, subtract, and multiply the given polynomials.  Worksheets in this "Bull's Eye" format are great for easy differentiation.  One small change and you can create an entirely new worksheet.

  • Multiplying Polynomials Row Game - A row game that I made for multiplying polynomials by a scalar or monomial. A row game is a self-checking activity for a pair of students.  The link to the google doc is https://goo.gl/nocZd0
