Specific Curriculum Outcome

N05     Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of adding and subtracting positive fractions and mixed numbers, with like and unlike denominators, concretely, pictorially and symbolically (limited to positive sums and differences).

N05 activities

  • Water Tank Puzzles from Naoki Inaba - These puzzles are a great way to practice fraction addition. They start fairly easy but quickly get challenging. You can find instructions and a question book in English at the TES website.

  • Placing Fractions on a Number Line from Open Middle - A way to create a need for students to get a common denominator.  Joe Schwartz discusses this problem in a blog post titled Standing on the Corner of Open Middle and Intellectual Need.
  • Yohaku Puzzle from yohaku.ca - Your task is to fill in the empty cells such that they give the sum shown in each row and column. In this puzzle each empty cell must be filled with a unit fraction.
