Mathematics essentials 10 Geometry

Specific Curriculum Outcomes

E1           identify the first 5 regular polygons and understand basic properties (# of sides, lines of symmetry, and definitions of geometric terms)

E2           describe and apply translations, reflections, rotations, and dilatations as they relate to symmetry and design, with the aid of technology

E3           determine (through investigations, using concrete materials and technology) the characteristics of shapes that will tile the plane with a reflecting pattern

E4           create designs involving tiling patterns (e.g., Escher-type designs, wallpaper or fabric designs), using technology (e.g., dynamic geometry software, design or  drawing software)

E5           analyse the geometric aspects of logos and design

E6           create a personal logo, using the mathematics of symmetry, translations, reflections, rotations, or dilations, with the aid of technology

Activities

  • Investigating Tessellations Using Pattern Blocks from MathForum - Students using pattern blocks to discover which regular polygons will tessellate a plane, that is which combinations of regular polygons will completely surround a point.
  • Miura Fold - A practical application of tessellations! The Miura Fold consists of tessellated parallelograms was invented by Koryo Miura to fold solar panels for satellites. You can also buy Tokyo subway maps that are folded this way.

  • HRSB Logo - Have students take a look at the HRSB logo and ask them what they notice.
    • The Bird/Book: The bird symbolizes strength, unity and freedom.  The HRSB can be seen as an open book, one that is accessible to students, staff and the public.
    • The Sun: The sun reflects a bright future for all students.  It also shows the board as an organization that is continuously working to expand its educational horizons.
    • The Water: The water forms the foundation of the logo.  As birds cannot live without water, students of all ages cannot live without knowledge.
