 Candy Division from Avery Pickford  Distribute some chocolate bars (not evenly) among x tables. Students know how these bars are distributed. Students secretly pick a table. The chocolate at each table is then evenly distributed between all students who chose that table. Students try to max return on each round. After each round students first determine how much chocolate they get and a running total, then if time how much everyone at every other table gets, and then if time what table (if any) they would rather be at for that round. I love on when everyone finishes the 1st part. Extension: A more complex version allows Students to assign %s to as many tables as they want. For example, I could assign 50% to table 1, 40% to table 2, and 10% to table 3. For computations, I would count as 1/2 a person at table 1 and get 1/2 a person's worth of chocolate.

 Let's Get Cooking  You are having a get together and are expecting 30 guests. You plan on serving Banana Bread, Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Sugar Cookies. Using three given recipes, students work with a group to create recipe cards to feed 30 people. Next, total up the ingredients needed. Then, check to see how much of each product needs to be purchased based on what is already on hand.

 Two Fractions from Michael Fenton  Stretch your students’ number sense skills with a fraction challenge. Use four different digits (from 29) and one operation (+, –, •, or ÷) to create two fractions in an expression with the greatest possible value. Also have students try to discover an expression with the least value or the expression closest to 0.
