Mathematics 12 Polynomial Functions
Specific Curriculum Outcome
RF01 Represent data, using polynomial functions (of degree ≤ 3), to solve problems.

Activities
- Water Flow from a Cylindrical Tank - Use a pop bottle to make a cylindrical water tank. Ask students to predict how the height of water will change over time as water is drained from this tank. Punch a whole in the bottom and record the level of water in the tank on ten second intervals. Use technology to determine the relationship between height and time (it should be a quadratic). Ask students why this isn't a straight line. A link to a description of this project: https://mast.queensu.ca/~peter/grade12/MHF4U-4/41.pdf
- Speedy Squares from Mary Bourassa and Speedy Squares from Jon Orr - We want to determine how long it will take to build a 26 x 26 square out of link cubes. As this is a lot of cubes, students might start by timing smaller squares, collecting some data, using quadratic regression and extrapolating.
